You made it and got an apartment in Berlin? Congratulations. Don’t forget to get a confirmation from your landlord that you have moved in. You will need this later.

We strongly recommend that you make an appointment at the Bürgeramt before your visit. If there is no free appointment on that day (which is the rule), you will be sent home. Registration is mandatory within 14 days after moving in.

I. How to book an appointment at Berliner Bürgeramt

There are three ways you can make an appointment at a Berlin Bürgeramt. Unfortunately all the options are only available in German.

Book an appointment online

The electronic appointment system offers you the possibility to make an appointment with a public authority online.

Berlin is growing at a rapid pace and with it the demands on the administration. Berlin’s citizens’ offices have been prepared for this challenge in terms of personnel. The aim is to achieve the goal of providing every customer with an appointment at the Bürgeramt within 14 days if required.

It is also worthwhile to check the calendar of appointments repeatedly for free dates. If the daily organisation in the Citizen’s Offices allows it, new additional appointments are set up every day, which you can book for your concern – even at short notice.

In case of requests with a legal deadline (e.g. in case of registration/change of residence), the confirmation of the booked appointment is already considered as proof for the adherence to the deadline. You are not committing an administrative offence, even if your request is only processed at the Bürgeramt after the deadline has been exceeded.

Book an appointment by telephone

  1. Bürgertelefon 115 – the central, telephone access to the Berlin administration
  2. Simply dial 115 without area code from a Berlin landline or your mobile phone in the Berlin area. The Berlin 115 Service Center can now also be reached directly from outside Berlin by calling 030-115 (from the fixed network and from many mobile networks).
  3. You can reach Bürgertelefon 115 Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 18:00 hours.

Book an appointment in Person

We recommend that you book an appointment in advance online or by telephone and do not go to the Bürgerbüro without an appointment.

If today’s online appointments are fully booked, this also applies to appointments at local residents’ registration offices on site. In these cases, please switch to another citizens’ office in the city or postpone your visit to another day.

The number of free capacities (still) available on the day of the appointment is naturally reduced more and more towards the end of opening hours. Therefore, it is possible that, depending on the number of visitors, a visit without an appointment may not be possible on the same day.

Should a visit to a citizens’ office nevertheless be necessary urgently and without an appointment being made, the staff in all citizens’ offices will in any case make a proposal for clarification of the respective concerns in a personal meeting.

Where to register in Berlin? How to schedule an online appointment?

Now that you have all your documents ready, it’s time to visit your local registration office in Berlin. However, please note that due to recent changes, you are now required to make an appointment before visiting the office.

To schedule an appointment, you can use the Berlin registration office’s online system. Click on the “Termin berlinweit suchen” (Search for appointments throughout Berlin) button located in the top right corner. Then, select a suitable date and time for your appointment.

If you don’t find an available appointment immediately, don’t worry. Keep checking the system every 30 minutes, as slots may become available.

Alternatively, you can also call the central registration office hotline at 030 – 115 to make your appointment. Just let them know that you wish to schedule an appointment to register your residence in Berlin by saying: “Ich möchte einen Termin machen, um meinen Wohnsitz in Berlin anzumelden” (I want to make an appointment to register my residence in Berlin).

What if all online appointments at the Bügeramt are booked out?

Don’t worry. It’s normal that the appointments for Anmeldung at the Bügeramt in Berlin are booked out several months in advance.

There’s a little trick you can do.

Just keep pressing the refresh button on the website on which you can book an appointment. Especially in the mornings new appointments are added by several registration offices. Sometimes people also cancel their appointments. You will definitely find an appointment if you keep looking.

Remember that for the Anmeldung you can go to any Bügeramt in Berlin – just go wherever a free appointment pops up.

Going to the registration office in Berlin – what to do

Make sure that you arrive at least 10 minutes before your appointment. Finding the correct waiting room can be confusing. Just follow the signs saying ‘Bürgeramt’. Best is to ask your way around.

If you have booked an appointment online, you receive your personal waiting number in a confirmation email. You then wait for your number to be displayed on a screen together with a corresponding room number. Quickly walk to the room. Most officials speak English in case you don’t speak German. Give the official all your registration documents. If everything is fine, you will get your registration confirmation right away (Anmeldebestätigung/ Meldebescheinigung).

Important: Check the registration confirmation right away! You want to make sure that your name and address are spelled correctly.
