FAQ – Facts & Information about your Commerzbank bank account

When is my account free of charge?

The current account is free of charge for you under the following conditions:

You use the checking account privately.
You have a minimum monthly deposit of 700 euros.
If less than 700 euros are received in your account in a month, 9.90 euros in account management fees will be charged for that month. This amount will be deducted from your checking account the next month. But don't worry – you have enough time to set up and move your account. The minimum funds receipt check is not performed until the second full month after the account is opened. Before that, the account is exempt from the minimum deposit requirement.
You manage the current account digitally (paperless) and use Commerzbank or Cash Group ATMs.
Additional charges: 2.50 euros per transaction/check for paper-based domestic/SEPA transfers, per collection of domestic checks made out in euros, and per cash withdrawal and cash deposit at Commerzbank counters.
Insofar as no custody fee is charged.
If applicable, a custody fee of 0.5% p.a. applies for total credit balances of 50,000 euros or more. The basis for calculation is the monthly average amount exceeding 50,000 euros of the euro-denominated deposits booked on all deposit and current accounts at Commerzbank, excluding negative balances.

How do I get the starting credit?

You have not had a current account with Commerzbank in the last 24 months.
You open the current account online.
You actively use the account for three months. This means at least five monthly bookings of at least 25 euros (e.g. from or to employers, pension funds, property management companies, energy providers, telephone providers, but no self-transfers or transfers). In the event of abuse of the above conditions, we reserve the right not to pay out the starting credit.
You consent to advertising mails and calls. Consent may be given during the account opening process or thereafter within 3 months at a Commerzbank branch or online at www.commerzbank.de/einwilligungen and may not be revoked for at least 3 months.

What cards do I get with my bank account?

Included with the free checking account:

Girocard: The Girocard is a contactless debit card. This means that you can use it to make contactless payments at appropriate devices and that the amount is then immediately credited to your account.
Virtual Debit Card: The virtual debit card is completely digital, so you do not receive a plastic card. The
Virtual Debit Card allows you to use Apple Pay and Google Pay without a traditional credit card. Simply activate the Virtual Debit Card in the banking app and you can make contactless transactions in stores and at ATMs worldwide. The authorization and settlement of transactions take place directly via your checking account.

How can I withdraw money?

With your Girocard:

First, you can withdraw cash free of charge from all Commerzbank and Cash Group ATMs in Germany. In addition to Commerzbank, the Cash Group also includes Deutsche Bank, UniCredit Bank, Postbank and all the subsidiary banks of these institutions. In total, there are over 7000 ATMs. Other banks charge fees when you withdraw cash from them.

You can also withdraw cash free of charge at around 1,300 Shell service stations and at participating branches of Rewe, Penny, Toom, Aldi Süd, Lidl, Edeka, DM, Netto, Norma, Famila and Galeria Kaufhof. From a corresponding minimum purchase value, conveniently take away amounts of up to 200 euros in cash when shopping with the Girocard. The minimum withdrawal amount is €10, then the choice of withdrawal amount is possible in €10 increments. Legitimation takes place at the store checkout with a PIN. For the exact conditions for cash withdrawals at affiliated retail outlets, please contact the respective partner.”

Step-by-step Guide to open a bank account at Commerzbank

You can usually use online banking 1-2 business days after you have legitimized yourself, as soon as you have activated the photoTAN procedure.

You can usually withdraw cash and pay in stores with your new Girocard after one week.

1. Your online application
Fill out the online application. You define your user name and PIN for online banking yourself. You will then see your new IBAN and your order confirmation.
2. Your documents
You can now save your application and will immediately receive an email with all important documents as well as the cancellation policy.
3. Confirmation of your identity
You can verify your identity via video chat, PostIdent procedure or in one of our branches. You will receive all the necessary information by mail.
4. The photoTAN activation
After 1-2 working days you will receive the letter for the activation of the photoTAN procedure in your online banking. Now your account is completely digitally usable!
5. The PIN for your card
For security reasons, we will first send you the PIN for your Girocard on the next working day after the legitimization.
6. Your new Girocard
About four business days later, you will receive your new Girocard in a separate letter.
