How to get a German landlord confirmation

In 2015, Germany implemented a new registration law (Meldegesetz) that required individuals to obtain a landlord confirmation when registering or deregistering in the country.

In German, this document goes by various names, including Vermieterbescheinigung (landlord certificate), Wohnungsgeberbestätigung (apartment giver confirmation), Einzugsbestätigung (move-in confirmation), or Auszugsbestätigung (move-out confirmation).

However, it’s important to note that there has been an update to this law. In November 2016, Germany revised the registration law, and currently, you only need to provide a landlord confirmation when registering in Germany (Einzugsbestätigung). The requirement for a landlord confirmation when deregistering and leaving Germany (Auszugsbestätigung) has been removed.

This change simplifies the process for those who are moving out of Germany, as you no longer need to obtain the landlord’s confirmation to complete the deregistration process.

What is a Einzugsbestätigung?

A “Einzugsbestätigung” or move-in confirmation is a written document provided by your landlord in Germany to verify that you have moved into a residence within the country.

To register your residence in Germany, you need to download the “Wohnungsgeberbestätigung” form and have your landlord fill it out and sign it. This form, along with the registration form, must be submitted to the registration office during the registration process (anmelden). It is essential that your landlord signs this form; otherwise, you will not be able to complete the registration procedure. The move-in confirmation serves as proof of your residency and is a crucial document for the registration process in Germany.

Important Update:

On November 1, 2016, a new registration law (Meldegesetz) was introduced, which changed the requirements for deregistration. Now, you no longer need a landlord confirmation (Auszugsbestätigung / Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) to deregister. Simply sending the deregistration form to your local registration office is sufficient for the deregistration process.
